Victoria Falls

One of the greatest attractions in Africa and one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world, Victoria Falls is located on the Zambezi River, the fourth largest river in Africa, which also defines the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Victoria Falls is the only waterfall in the world with a length of more than a kilometer and a height of more than hundred meters. It is also considered to be the largest fall in the world.
The noise of Victoria Falls can be heard from a distance of 40 kilometers, while the spray and mist from the falling water is rising to a height of over 400 meters and can be seen from a distance of 50 kilometers. No wonder that the local tribes used to call the waterfall Mosi-o-Tunya “The smoke that thunders”.
The falls were formed in a zone of crustal faults. On the crest of the fall numerous islands divide the main flow into several branches. During floods, the water flow capacity reaches half a million liters of water per minute.

The water level varies throughout the year; it is at its peak in April, at the end of the rainy season when on average 500,000,000 liters of water flow and it is at its lowest level in October and early November.

Activity 01

Canoeing Above Victoria Falls

They may be self-paddle or you may be paddled by a guide. Canoe trips are typically available in half-day, full-day, sunset and overnight excursions. Be aware of hippos and crocodiles and do not approach either.
Canoe trips depart from both the Zimbabwean and Zambian sides of the river. A variation on the theme is the “booze” canoe, which is a gentle canoe trip in which you sit and watch the scenery go by while being paddled to beautiful locations where – as the name implies – cocktails are offered. It’s a great way to bird- and game-watch.

Visitors climb into their sturdy Canadian canoes and the adventure begins. Padding into the Mana Pools National Park the first days distance is usually short, intended to give canoeists the chance to get used to the canoes and padding and after a few kilometres visitors arrive at the first camp which has been set up in advance.

Activity 04

A late afternoon boat cruise is a wonderful way to enjoy the tranquility of the upper Zambezi and see a spectacular African sunset. During your two-hour cruise you can expect to see elephants, hippos, crocodiles, vervet monkeys, baboons and a variety of birdlife.

Activity 05

Explore the historical town of Livingstone in Zambia

Livingstone is located 10 kilometres from the Zambian side of Victoria Falls Bridge and is the gateway to many of the attractions of Victoria Falls and Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park.

This historical town was moved from its original site at the Old Drift to Constitution Hill in 1905 due to malarial outbreaks. The new location was carefully planned with wide, tree-lined streets and buildings, high ceilings and mosquito-netted verandas.

Livingstone has preserved much of its colonial architecture, yet it also has a small-town African atmosphere. If you spend a morning strolling along the colonial streets, drinking a coffee at one of the pavement cafés and exploring the colourful local markets, you’ll get an interesting insight into this fascinating town and local life.
